Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease involving the upper and lower motor neurons that control voluntary movement. When neurons cannot transmit impulses to the muscles, the muscles begin to atrophy, and weakness increases over time. The diagnosis of ALS is established by the finding of selective impaired motor neurons, including the descending supraspinal motor pathways and their neurons of origin, and the brainstem and spinal motor neurons. The understanding of where and how the body is affected by ALS supports the ability to provide the appropriate interventions.

The goal of this amyotrophic lateral sclerosis continuing education module is to provide an update on recent developments in the treatment of patients with ALS. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List four symptoms and signs of ALS
  • Cite three nervous system functions that remain unaffected in ALS
  • List four important functions of the healthcare professional in the care of patients with ALS
