Summary:

Fibromyalgia is a poorly understood condition that results in chronic pain, requiring sufferers to sacrifice their usual daily occupations to seek pain relief. There are no consistently effective medical interventions to manage the pain of fibromyalgia, and although occupational therapists have numerous modalities and techniques to address the physical sources of pain, they may feel frustrated and discouraged that patients with fibromyalgia have recurring complaints. Many patients turn to complementary and alternative medicine for help. Yoga is an excellent treatment for fibromyalgia because it does not compartmentalize the symptoms, and is gentle, nonjudgmental and provides a wellness orientation lacking in many traditional medical treatments. Helping clients to incorporate yoga practices into their daily routines may help them to take a more active role in reducing and managing stress and pain associated with this chronic condition.

Objectives:

The goal of this yoga and fibromyalgia program is to provide therapists with an understanding of the benefits of employing yoga techniques in the long-term management of fibromyalgia. After completion of this program, the therapist will be able to:
  • Describe two yoga asanas (poses) for relaxation and two yoga asanas for stretching and strengthening in fibromyalgia
  • Describe two pranayama techniques (breathing exercises) for fibromyalgia
  • Discuss three advantages of adding yoga techniques for treatment of fibromyalgia to traditional therapy based on current evidence

I think it gives a great overall of the application of yoga in caring for these patients. It also educated me regarding the option of yoga as well as its components so that I can appropriately recommend it as a treatment vehicle and adjunct to the services I provide.

This very clearly summarizes the interface of traditional "exercises" with 'yoga exercises". It explains how the focus and intention is more client-centered and easily modified to each individual. It focuses on the integration of tradition approaches with a more holistic integrative approach of yoga as defined primarily with breathing, and postures. As a certified yoga teacher i found the description clear and concise with no great "magic" or promises---but I have used in my practice and find very effective.
