Summary:

Anxiety can be mild, moderate, or severe, or even escalate to panic. While mild anxiety may be protective, a severely anxious person is so focused on specific details that he or she can’t think of anything else, and behavior becomes directed toward relieving the anxiety. Panic is associated with loss of control and a sense of dread, with increased motor activity, reduced ability to relate to others, and distorted perceptions. The risk factors that contribute to this condition are complex and include genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. The goal of this continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ clinical knowledge about changes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition: DSM-5 regarding the current classification of anxiety disorders and screening, identifying, and treating the most common types of anxiety disorders.
