Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices that originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. Yoga is the art of fusing the body and mind for an overall sense of well-being. For the child with special healthcare needs, the ultimate goal of yoga is self-awareness. Yoga provides a mechanism whereby children can discover a place of stillness and contentment within themselves, which creates mental equilibrium, emotional stability and physical health.
The goal of this yoga continuing education program is to provide physical therapists and occupational therapists with information regarding yoga as a complementary therapeutic approach to treatment of children with special healthcare needs. After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Define the five major components of a yoga program designed for a child with special healthcare needs
- Demonstrate an understanding of the philosophy and benefits of yoga for children with special healthcare needs
