Course Overview

Of persons age 50 and older, one in two women and one in four men will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture. The impact of osteoporosis is particularly severe as people age. Each year, osteoporosis contributes to about 2 million fractures that may cause permanent disability, disabling pain, loss of independence, or death. This number is expected to increase to more than 3 million by 2025. This continuing education course will focus on normal bone physiology and the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, diagnosis of osteoporosis, risk factors and their modification, treatment of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures, and the nurse’s role in primary and secondary prevention strategies aimed at stopping this epidemic.
