Course Overview

In 1987, Congress established the standards that nursing facilities must meet to obtain reimbursement under federal and state Medicaid programs. Frequent surveys ensure that residents maintain the highest possible physical, mental, and psychological well-being.  Helping residents maintain adequate nutritional status can be challenging in this highly regulated healthcare environment.  This course outlines the importance of the completion of the Resident Assessment Instrument, not just for clinical outcome measurement, but also for cost and reimbursement.  Timely screening and assessment of nutrition parameters is essential to ensure judicious interventions and care plan development.  Additional topics include the discussion of quality assessment and assurance, investigational protocols for nutrition, pressure ulcers, feeding assistants, and hydration; as well as special considerations in the care of the terminally ill resident.

About the Course Author

Dr. Munoz is a Clinical Nutrition Manager responsible for guiding the clinical nutrition therapy services and supervising the performances of 65 dietitians in 78 skilled nursing facilities. Her responsibilities include development, communication and implementation of efficient and effective nutrition protocols. Dr Munoz teaches, reviews manuscripts, writes continuing education programs and works on evidence analysis projects for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
