Course Overview

Why do two individuals who eat healthy diets not derive the same health benefits? Part of the answer is nutrigenetics, the study of the effect of genetic variation on dietary responses or gene-nutrient interactions. Genetic variation has been hypothesized to influence nutrient metabolism and chronic disease risk. However, determining if a genetic variation (polymorphism) has a clinically relevant effect is very difficult especially given other influences on metabolism such as environment and lifestyle. Preliminary findings provide some evidence that it is necessary to personalize dietary recommendations based on genetic variation to improve health outcomes in persons with chronic disease.
