Managing Refractory Asthma
by Instructor: Kristen Szymonik, BS, RRT, AE-C

Course Overview

Asthma affects millions of Americans, and most are treated successfully with conventional pharmacological agents; however, a subset of these patients has refractory asthma, which is characterized by failure to control symptoms despite accelerating treatment. Refractory asthma is a severe, persistent form of the disease that lingers despite intensive pharmacological therapy. Patients with refractory asthma are among the most challenging respiratory patients for clinicians to successfully manage, as these patients’ airway tissue is often resistant to approved pharmacological therapies, including inhaled and systemic corticosteroids. A multi-faceted approach, addressing both environmental controls and triggers, as well as introducing emerging pharmacological therapies, is of vital importance in the management of refractory asthma.
