Course Overview

Reading difficulties are common in aphasia and can lead to reduced quality of life, yet as many as 23% of stroke survivors identified reading comprehension problems as a long-term issue that needs to be addressed. This program presents the normal processes used for reading, the specific types and theoretical causes of reading problems associated with aphasia, assessment of reading, and treatments to manage reading disorders. Specific treatment methods generally fall into four categories: phonological approaches to improve phoneme-to-grapheme conversion, oral reading to address efficiency of reading, strategy-based treatments targeting overall language and metacognitive skills, and treatment of specific cognitive problems believed to be at the root of some reading disorders. The theoretical basis and efficacy of these approaches will be reviewed, along with their practically for clinical practice.

Mary Purdy, PhD, SLP, CCC, is a speech-language pathologist and professor at Southern Connecticut State University, where she teaches courses about neurogenic communication disorders at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and participates in regional and national conferences on aphasia.
