Course Overview

The number of opioid overdose deaths in the United States continues to rise and contributes to what is referred to today as an opioid epidemic. Naloxone is a pure opioid antagonist and reverses the effects of opioids, including respiratory depression. Since the 1970s, medical personnel have been using naloxone to treat opioid overdoses, and it is now commercially available in auto-injector and nasal-spray dosage forms intended to be used by caregivers. Patients at risk for overdose should be given a prescription for naloxone and educated on its use in an emergency. This updated continuing education module will discuss the role of naloxone in the treatment of opioid overdose and review the available delivery systems.
