Course Overview

Fibromyalgia is a poorly understood condition that results in chronic pain, requiring sufferers to sacrifice their usual daily occupations to seek pain relief. There are no consistently effective medical interventions to manage the pain of fibromyalgia, and although occupational therapists have numerous modalities and techniques to address the physical sources of pain, they may feel frustrated and discouraged that patients with fibromyalgia have recurring complaints. Many patients turn to complementary and alternative medicine for help. Yoga is an excellent treatment for fibromyalgia because it does not compartmentalize the symptoms, and is gentle, nonjudgmental, and provides a wellness orientation lacking in many traditional medical treatments. Yoga is becoming a more prevalent treatment option that is popularly considered for injury rehabilitation and is considered to influence positive and holistic mind-body coordination.¹Helping clients to incorporate yoga practices into their daily routines may help them to take a more active role in reducing and managing stress and pain associated with this chronic condition. The goal of this yoga and fibromyalgia course is to provide therapists with an understanding of the benefits of employing yoga techniques in the long-term management of fibromyalgia.

About the Course Author

Laurel Koss MS, OTR/L, attended the University of Pittsburgh and completed her Occupational Therapy degree from Duquesne University. With over 21 years in clinical occupational therapy settings, Laurel has experience in skilled nursing facilities, outpatient orthopedic and neurology, long term care, rehab, and acute care. She also has extensive training and experience in upper extremity amputee care, orthotics and prosthetics, and research and development. Laurel has been an adjunct professor for Saint Petersburg College and Nova Southeastern University, Tampa campus and is currently the lead occupational therapy writer for the Rehab team with Relias.
