Course Overview

Depressive disorder is a form of mental illness that interferes with an individual‘s quality of life. Symptoms include feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness and fatigue. Major depressive disorder often occurs with other types of mental illnesses. Treatment begins with a thorough biopsychosocial assessment and generally includes medication and psychological treatment, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or psychodynamic therapy. The therapist should establish a plan for evaluating positive or negative treatment effects on the client‘s symptoms. Suicide risk is an important factor to assess. Relapse prevention is also a crucial component of overall treatment to help a client avoid a full or partial relapse of symptoms.
