Course Overview

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a well-known hallucinogen that acts on serotonin receptors causing alterations in mood, thought processes, and sensory perception. The majority of the LSD manufactured in the United States has been consumed for recreational use, because it is classified as a Schedule I drug and has no approved medicinal use. Even though LSD is widely abused, it is not known to be highly addictive, and very few deaths are attributed to LSD alone. LSD has also been investigated by clinicians for the treatment of various neuropsychiatric disease states and for palliative purposes in end of life care. The goal of this educational program is to provide pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with information about LSD use, pharmacology, clinical presentation and management of toxicity, and developing uses in the treatment of psychiatric and neurologic disorders.
