Course Overview

Apraxia is a disorder of skilled and purposeful movement that occurs with neurological damage or disorders affecting the praxis system. People with limb apraxia often have severe functional deficits that impede everyday task performance and increase dependence on caregivers. Historically, apraxia has been a poorly understood disorder with much debate surrounding its definition and subtypes. Although research studies on rehabilitative methods are scarce, current views support occupation-based assessment and intervention.
The goal of this apraxia educational course is to review the causes and types of limb apraxia, examine how apraxia affects everyday function, and discuss current evidence-based methods for assessment and treatment of apraxia.

About the Course Author

Barbra Saaty, MS, OTR, has supervised as well as worked closely with an interdisciplinary team for rehabilitation of patients post stroke. Barbra Saaty, OTR, MS has declared that no conflict of interest, Relevant Financial Relationship or Relevant Non-Financial Relationship exists.
Laurel Koss MS, OTR/L, attended the University of Pittsburgh and completed her Occupational Therapy degree from Duquesne University. With over 21 years in clinical occupational therapy settings, Laurel has experience in skilled nursing facilities, outpatient orthopedic and neurology, long term care, rehab, and acute care. She also has extensive training and experience in upper extremity amputee care, orthotics and prosthetics, and research and development. Laurel has been an adjunct professor for Saint Petersburg College and Nova Southeastern University, Tampa campus and is currently the lead occupational therapy writer for the Rehab team with Relias.
