The types of central nervous system (CNS) tumors that affect the pediatric population occur less frequently in the adult population. Diagnosis at an early age is essential to detect the existence of tumors that may be damaging to a developing CNS. However, diagnosis and treatment of these tumors is different in the pediatric population, especially when using ionizing radiation.
Adjustments in the diagnosis and management occur to protect children by decreasing the toxic effects related to both diagnosis and treatment. Unfortunately, that may influence the outcome of the disease. The management of brain tumors in pediatric patients will involve an interprofessional team which can include pharmacy personnel and imaging professionals.

After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Discuss the major types of central nervous system tumors in the pediatric population, along with their incidence and specific characteristics.
  • Identify the best choice workup for such cases, as well as new techniques.
  • Describe the ideal management of children with central nervous system tumors as well as the outcome for many of these patients.
