Tinea capitis, commonly known as ringworm of the scalp, is one of the most common superficial fungal infections in the world. It typically affects school-aged children up to 10 to 12 years old. Tinea capitis infections can be caused by several different dermatophytes, making the clinical presentation unique to the fungus species. Once the fungus species has been identified, it can easily be treated with oral antifungal agents. Education is important to prevent and/or reduce disease transmission to others.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with a complete and thorough overview of tinea capitis, including the information needed to identify, treat, and prevent tinea capitis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Summarize the etiology, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of tinea capitis
  • Develop a treatment plan and drug regimen for tinea capitis
  • Support patients by teaching them prevention methods to decrease the spread of tinea capitis in the community
