The most common drugs of abuse include hallucinogens, opioids, stimulants, sedatives, inhalants, and anabolic steroids. Healthcare professionals should know how to recognize and treat patients who have consumed these substances. This course will discuss the prevalence of these drugs, their mechanisms of action, their effects on the body, and identification and treatment of patients.


The goal of this program is to provide healthcare professionals with knowledge of the most common drugs of abuse, their effects, and treatment options. At the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to:
  • List recreational drugs that are most commonly abused in the United States.
  • Identify the most common adverse effects of toxicity from drugs used for recreational purposes. 
  • Review the available management strategies for toxicity of drugs discussed in this course.
