Summary:

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a major cause of thousands of visits to the ED every year in the United States. It is also responsible for about 1,000 to 2,000 deaths annually. Unintentional, non-fire-related carbon monoxide poisoning is estimated to account for around $1.3 billion in lost earnings and emergency medical expenses every year in the U.S. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur from vehicle exhaust when cars are kept in garages, methylene chloride in paint thinner and other solvents, and improper use of gas-powered engines or charcoal briquettes indoors. The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are nonspecific, including nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, dizziness, and chest pain.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide a comprehensive overview of carbon monoxide poisoning and its appropriate identification and management. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Review the properties of carbon monoxide and the pathophysiology of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Recognize the causes of carbon monoxide poisoning and appropriate preventive strategies.
  • Identify symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Describe long-term consequences of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Identify strategies for management of acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

This course presented much information. The problem in this course is that it is worded in a way that came across as biased against houses that use any heating systems other than electric. The language should be worded to sound more objective and less discriminatory toward house heating systems that burn combustible fuels.
