Summary:

Research supports that people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus who engage in a physically active lifestyle maintain better control over the disease and its complications. Further, it may even prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Despite these findings, about 40.8% of people with diabetes get less than 10 minutes per week of any moderate or vigorous physical activity (CDC, 2017). For adults without diabetes, about 54% of adults in the general population regularly meet the activity guidelines (CDC, 2018).

Objectives:

The goal of this educational program is to provide education on the importance of promoting a physically active lifestyle to clients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus as an essential component of diabetes management.

The content in this course is applicable to registered dietitians, health educators, nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists in all care settings. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Explain how proper control of blood glucose, lipids, and blood pressure in people who have or are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus influences their outcomes.
  • Discuss the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and the role a physically active lifestyle plays in the control of the disease.
