Summary:

Do not be caught unprepared during the unexpected. Natural disasters are more common than we think and can strike at any moment. Healthcare and food service professionals as well as the staff they manage must be ready to jump in with both feet when floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and the like threaten their community. This course will equip food service professionals with the knowledge and resources necessary to conduct disaster-planning activities in their hospitals, healthcare facilities, or schools. The goal of this course is to discuss how healthcare and food service professionals can use strategies to plan for disasters, either man-made or natural.

Objectives:

After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the four components of disaster preparedness.
  • Describe how hospitals and schools interact with the community to conduct a Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA) and prepare an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
  • Describe the role and activities of food service authorities during a disaster.
  • Discuss how to create an internal communications system, prepare a reserve foods list, meet hygiene needs, and create a manpower resource audit.
