Giardia is a protozoan parasite that lives in water and can be transmitted via contaminated water, food, or fecal matter. In addition to being the most frequent cause of parasitic diarrheal disease in the United States, Giardia is common around the world. It typically presents as a mild disease, which can be managed in an outpatient setting. Giardia is often easily treated or self-limiting, and there are steps people can take to reduce their risk of acquiring it. Avoiding common sources, such as unfiltered water in developing countries or contaminated fecal matter, is important. Being aware of the risks and how to avoid disease is key for prevention.

The goal of this continuing education program is to instruct healthcare professionals on how Giardia is acquired and ways to prevent infection. This course provides information on the pathogen, risks of transmission, treatment, and prevention of giardiasis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the pathophysiology and epidemiology of giardia infections.
  • Describe the clinical presentation of a patient with a giardia infection.
  • Evaluate treatment options and prevention methods for giardia infections.
