Acute radiation sickness (ARS) is caused by a radiological accident resulting in the contamination or overexposure of humans and/or the environment to radioactive material, secondary to an unforeseen event. The radiological consequences include external and internal contamination, leading to serious hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, and neurological syndromes. The severity of these syndromes depend on the dose of radiation exposure as reflected in the reduction of circulating lymphocyte counts. Radiation dosimetry, along with other laboratory tests, is performed to quantitate the exposure dose. The treatment plan of ARS is developed based on the radiation dose and its effects, symptomatic care, use of growth factors, platelet transfusion, bone marrow transplantation, and more.

The goal of this course is to review various facets of acute radiation sickness. A discussion about radiobiology and dose-effect relationship are presented. Diagnosis and quantification of exposed radiation with symptoms of various stages and recommendations about acute radiation sickness (ARS) clinical management are provided. Upon completion of the course, you should be able to:
  • Recall how to respond to emergency situations involving radiation exposure.
  • Identify ways to communicate with other healthcare professionals during a radiation disaster.

Since most people won't come into contact with radiation sickness, this course can provide information on how to treat it. Also shows the chance of survival.
