Summary:

This continuing education course evaluates the drug combination known as the “The Holy Trinity,” which consists of an opioid, a benzodiazepine, and a muscle relaxant. The synergistic activity of these drugs may potentiate adverse events and even lead to death. In combination, these drugs can induce side effects such as drowsiness, confusion, tremors, increased seizure risk, and respiratory depression, leading to death. “The Holy Trinity” also has been shown to bring about euphoria in patients, thus creating a potential for drug abuse and misuse. Pharmacists are frontline professionals who can advise patients on such drug interactions, provide the most appropriate therapy, and deter misuse or abuse.

Objectives:

The goal of this course is to provide education on the drug combination known as “The Holy Trinity.” The learner will be able to identify the components of “The Holy Trinity” combination, evaluate the associated risks, and understand the impact on healthcare services utilization. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify patients at risk for receiving a “Holy Trinity” prescription.
  • Describe the potential adverse effects and pharmacology behind the “The Holy Trinity”.
  • Recognize the impact of pharmacist intervention on “The Holy Trinity,” specifically prevention.
