Keeping up with the approval of new medications is one of the many challenges of pharmacists and other healthcare providers. As an expert in the field of drug information, a pharmacist plays a vital role in educating patients and other healthcare providers on new medication options. In 2017, the FDA approved 46 new medications to treat a wide variety of disease states, including cancers, multiple sclerosis, and hepatitis C. Many of these new medications will significantly change the way we treat these diseases. This course provides an overview of newly approved medications and their importance to patient care. Specific drug characteristics, the clinical trials that were pivotal to the drugs’ approval, and therapeutic use of drugs are discussed.

The goal of this course is to educate healthcare professionals on new medications approved by the FDA in 2017. At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the therapeutic use for new drugs approved by the FDA in 2017.
  • Identify key clinical trials that brought these new medications to market.
  • Describe dosing and other caveats in therapy for first-in-class medications.
