Summary:

Up to 25% of people with cancer experience clinical depression, which can affect their disease outcome, compliance with treatment, and quality of life. Despite this, depression is known to be underdiagnosed and undertreated in people with cancer. Several factors contribute to this situation. There are several validated screening tools that can be easily used in a variety of settings, along with standards of practice that providers can follow to treat depression. Multiple healthcare disciplines can contribute to the patient's plan of care related to depression, including patient education, making appropriate community referrals, coordinating psychotherapy, medication management, and complementary and alternative therapies. Consistent routine screening of psychosocial distress along with knowledgeable healthcare team members can result in early identification and treatment of depression, which contributes to better patient outcomes.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide nurses, physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, and radiologic technologists with information about the occurrence of depression in people with cancer, including symptoms, special considerations for patients undergoing treatment, screening tools, and available treatments. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Indicate two reasons that depression is underdiagnosed and undertreated in patients with cancer
  • Identify three potential negative effects of depression on the well-being of a patient with cancer
  • Describe three interprofessional interventions that can be recommended for patients with cancer who are experiencing depression
