Summary:

Insomnia is the most frequently occurring sleep disorder in the United States. Cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the preferred first-line therapy for treatment of insomnia, but some patients are unwilling to participate in CBT-I, or it may be ineffective. In these cases, pharmacotherapy options may be needed. Although newer sedative-hypnotics approved for the treatment of insomnia have reduced some of the dangerous adverse effects of earlier medications, these newer agents still carry significant risks. All sedative-hypnotics can cause impaired next-day cognition and functioning, which can be dangerous for patients. In addition, many patients seek over-the-counter or herbal treatment options to improve sleep. It is important for healthcare professionals to evaluate patients for comorbidities that could be contributing to insomnia symptoms and to educate patients about the proper use of medications for the treatment of insomnia.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide a comprehensive overview of insomnia and present the latest recommendations and risks associated with the use of pharmacotherapy options for the treatment of insomnia. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the symptoms of insomnia and signs of daytime impairment due to sleep deprivation or sedative-hypnotic agents
  • Recognize the risk factors for insomnia and its associated comorbidities
  • Identify therapy options for the treatment of insomnia
  • Describe the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommendations for pharmacotherapy options to treat insomnia
  • Identify adverse effects and risks associated with medications used for the treatment of insomnia
