Inflammatory bowel disease is an autoimmune disease of the gastrointestinal tract. The main subtypes of IBD are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Ulcerative colitis involves inflammation of the colonic epithelium in a continuous fashion while Crohn’s disease may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract and typically presents with healthy epithelium disrupted by patches of inflammation. IBD is a chronic condition that commonly presents with periods of relapse and remission. While no treatments have been found to cure IBD, disease severity can be managed with available medications. Treatment goals involve remission of active disease and reducing the occurrence of relapse. Common treatments available include salicylates, immunomodulators, and biologic agents.

The goal of this continuing education program is to inform pharmacists about inflammatory bowel disease. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate between subtypes of IBD based on clinical symptoms and endoscopic findings
  • Identify evidence-based treatments for IBD and adverse events associated with various treatment types
  • Discuss the role of biologic agents in the management of IBD
