Summary:

Tinea capitis, commonly known as ringworm of the scalp, is one of the most common superficial fungal infections in the world. Typically, it affects school-age children up to 10 to 12 years of age. Tinea capitis infections can be caused by several different dermatophytes, making the clinical presentation unique to the fungus species. Once the fungus species has been identified, it can be treated easily with oral antifungal agents. Education is important to prevent/reduce disease transmission to other individuals.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacy technicians with a complete and thorough overview of tinea capitis, including the information needed to identify, treat, and prevent tinea capitis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Recognize the clinical presentation of tinea capitis.
  • Identify common medications used to treat tinea capitis.
  • Discuss methods for preventing a tinea capitis infection.
  • Identify materials pharmacy technicians can provide self-care patients.
