Summary:

Lithium has been a preferred agent for the management of bipolar disorder for decades. For patients with bipolar disorder, lithium may be very effective, but the adverse reactions and toxicities related to lithium are often quite bothersome and possibly dangerous to the patient. Some adverse reactions may also impact medication adherence, therefore affecting a patient’s mental well-being. There is often a fine line between adverse reactions that occur with therapeutic doses and serum lithium levels and toxicities that develop with supratherapeutic serum levels. Healthcare providers who work with patients treated with lithium must be knowledgeable about lithium toxicities, serum levels, and appropriate monitoring.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information about lithium, specifically the therapeutic uses, pharmacology/pharmacokinetics, toxicities, and monitoring parameters. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify three risk factors that may increase the chance for lithium toxicity
  • Review the symptoms of lithium toxicity
  • Discuss various drug classes that may interact with lithium
