Essential tremor is the most common form of tremor. It can be stressful and embarrassing for patients, and can potentially lead to disabilities. The diagnosis of ET is based on clinical findings, as there are no laboratory tests to confirm the presence of ET. Therefore, it is imperative for healthcare professionals to know the differences among the various types of tremor and the possible causes so patients can be managed appropriately. Although many medications and other non-drug treatments have been evaluated for ET, propranolol and primidone remain first-line therapy. There are also several lifestyle tips that should be discussed with patients to help them cope with ET. Healthcare professionals should be familiar with ET, various treatment options, and lifestyle tips to help patients with this chronic condition.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information about essential tremor, including an overview of the condition, how it compares to other types of tremor, treatment options, and counseling points for patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify three types of tremor
  • List two first-line drug therapies for ET and how they should be used
  • Discuss lifestyle tips for patients with ET
