Nausea and vomiting are one of the most common healthcare-seeking conditions in the United States. The economic burden to the United States, both direct and indirect, is excessive. Presentation for nausea and vomiting can be acute or chronic, with the cure being to treat the underlying cause. There are several drug classes that can be used to treat nausea and vomiting, all of which target specific neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, substance P, acetylcholine, and histamine). Understanding the underlying cause and pathophysiological mechanisms that cause nausea and vomiting is essential for optimal selection of effective pharmacological therapy.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare providers with current and accurate pharmacological information about medications for nausea and vomiting. A discussion about the causes and management of nausea and vomiting are provided. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define nausea and vomiting.
  • Discuss the difference between acute and chronic nausea and vomiting.
  • Identify common causes and complications of nausea and vomiting.
  • Review and select an appropriate antiemetic therapy using the etiology as a basis for choosing the pharmacological treatment.
