Summary:

Tinea pedis, better known as athlete’s foot, is a fungal infection of the feet characterized by itchy, scaly soles, and painful fissures between the toes. It can be transmitted from human-to-human contact in warm, humid environments. Treatment for tinea pedis centers on both non-pharmacologic and pharmacological measures. Topical antifungals are often the mainstay of therapy; however, oral medications may be considered for more severe and recurrent infections. Pharmacists and technicians should be aware of the signs and symptoms of tinea pedis and be knowledgeable about over-the-counter recommendations, including antifungal treatment duration, proper administration directions, and potential adverse effects of therapy. This is essential because patients with athlete’s foot may present in a variety of settings, including retail, ambulatory, long-term, and hospital care.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education course is to provide pharmacy technicians with information on tinea pedis, including its clinical presentation, treatments for the infection, and education points for patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, transmission, and diagnosis of tinea pedis.
  • Review classes of medications used to treat tinea pedis.
  • Understand proper administration techniques and duration of therapy to treat tinea pedis.
