Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a major cause of thousands of visits to the ED every year in the United States. It is also responsible for about 1,000 to 2,000 deaths every year. Unintentional, non-fire-related CO poisoning has been estimated to account for around $1.3 billion in lost earnings and emergency medical expenses every year in the U.S. CO poisoning can occur from vehicle exhaust when cars are kept in garages, methylene chloride in paint thinner and other solvents, and improper use of gas-powered engines or charcoal briquette grills indoors. The symptoms of CO poisoning are nonspecific. These nonspecific symptoms can sometimes result in CO poisoning being wrongly identified as the flu. Treatment with 100% oxygen will cause carbon monoxide to dissociate from hemoglobin, allowing the patient to recover. However, CO poisoning can result in many long-term consequences, especially neurological dysfunction.

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide a comprehensive overview of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and its appropriate identification and management. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Review the properties of CO and the pathophysiology of CO poisoning
  • Recognize the causes of CO poisoning and appropriate preventive strategies
  • Identify the symptoms of CO poisoning
  • Describe long-term consequences of CO poisoning
  • Identify strategies for management of acute CO poisoning
