Trichomoniasis is the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection in the United States, which may be present without symptoms in some patients. Symptoms in women may include diffuse, malodorous yellow/green vaginal discharge with urethritis, epididymitis, or prostatitis in men. One major diagnostic factor is nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), which involves collecting vaginal, endocervical, or urine specimens in women and urethral or urine specimens in men. Metronidazole is the drug of choice for treatment of trichomoniasis. It is crucial to counsel patients on abstaining from sex while infected and notifying all sexual partners for referral and treatment. Patients should also be counseled on safe sex practices. This module will discuss the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of trichomoniasis.

The goals of this self-study module are to educate healthcare professionals on the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of trichomoniasis and to identify high-risk patients who would benefit from screening. At the end of this self-study course, the healthcare provider should be familiar with appropriate treatment, screening, and diagnosis of patients and their partners with trichomoniasis infections. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify at least five risk factors for trichomoniasis infection.
  • Discuss three diagnostic tests and sensitivity/specificity of the testing.
  • Discuss treatment options for patients with and without other concomitant medical conditions.
  • Outline at least four counseling points for patients to prevent reinfection.
