Summary:

Status asthmaticus is the most severe form of an asthma attack; if not detected early with prompt treatment, it can lead to death or permanent disability. All patients with asthma and particularly uncontrolled asthma are at risk, and it disproportionately affects minority groups. There are major risk factors that put patients at risk for status asthmaticus. When an asthma attack is recognized, there are optimal treatment regimens available in the outpatient setting to prevent hospitalizations. However, if the patient is hospitalized, prompt treatment using conventional therapies as well as off-label therapies may be warranted to prevent progression to intensive level care. Patients that survive this severe acute form of asthma should be closely monitored in the outpatient setting as a repeat attack may be fatal.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education course is to provide pharmacists with accurate and current information about status asthmaticus, conventional treatment, and non-conventional treatment in the ambulatory and emergency setting. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain the pathophysiology of an asthma attack.
  • Identify at least 4 risk factors for status asthmaticus.
  • Review the treatment approach for managing an asthma attack in the ambulatory and emergency department setting.
  • List 6 classes of drugs used to treat status asthmaticus and describe their characteristics.
