Summary:

This course is meant to provide pharmacists with updated knowledge about drug therapies for weight loss. The first part of the course covers how to identify a patient who could benefit from weight loss medication. The next part covers the current drugs indicated for weight loss and detailed dosing, contraindications, side effects, expected benefits, and important patient counseling information for each drug. Next, several off-label drug efficacy studies are covered. The course also covers how to monitor and follow up with patients taking these medications. With these medications, it is important to follow up, because not every drug is effective for each patient, and switching to a different drug is common. Lastly, patient misconceptions about weight loss are covered.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists with up-to-date knowledge about weight loss medications and how to counsel patients who are taking these medications. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify when a patient can benefit from a weight loss medication.

  • Describe how to monitor patients taking these medications.
