Summary:

Aspergillus is a common fungus responsible for many different illnesses, ranging from mild allergy-type reactions to life-threatening lung infections. Immunocompromised patients, such as transplant recipients, are especially vulnerable to invasive aspergillosis, which is often fatal. Aspergillosis is becoming more common since the number of transplant recipients is rising. Symptoms of invasive aspergillosis include fever, chest pain, cough, and shortness of breath. Since the symptoms associated with aspergillosis infection are nonspecific, maintaining a high level of clinical suspicion, recognizing predisposing factors, and using appropriate diagnostic testing are key in differentiating it from other infectious syndromes. Fast treatment with systemic antifungal therapy can save lives. Although Aspergillus lives both indoors and outdoors, pharmacists can educate susceptible patients on how to limit their exposure to this fungus.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information regarding the identification, prevention, and treatment of invasive aspergillosis.
After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify patient populations at risk for aspergillosis
  • List common sources of Aspergillus fungus
  • Discuss information about how to limit exposure to Aspergillus
  • Review the evidence-based monitoring parameters for treating aspergillosis and the specific agents and modalities required
