Summary:

Clostridium difficile has become one of, if not the most, prevalent nosocomial acquired infections around the world. The explosion of this organism can be attributed to overuse of antibiotics in both humans and agriculture, as well as the emergence of a highly virulent strain of the organism. Reports of community-acquired disease are also increasing, meaning this infection is not confined only to inpatients or those in other healthcare settings such as long-term care facilities. Given the wide prevalence, it is essential that all healthcare providers recognize the risk factors, symptoms, and appropriate preventive measures to combat the spread of this disease.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists with information about Clostridium difficile risks, presentation, management, and prevention. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the epidemiology of and risk factors associated with C. difficile
  • Recognize the presentation of C. difficile infection and interpret diagnostic testing results
  • Choose appropriate pharmacological and nonpharmacological measures for the management of C. difficile infection
