Course Overview

People infected with HIV and AIDS live all over the world. There are about 36.9 million individuals living with HIV. HIV and AIDS is also a concern in the U.S. In 2017, around 1.1 million people were living with HIV, although 14% of them did not know they were infected. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019.) Some states report higher incidences of HIV and AIDS than others do. For example, Florida is one state that has a high number of people living with HIV/AIDS (CDC, 2019a). Florida has specific state laws that cover testing, consent, reporting, and treatment to help prevent and treat HIV and AIDS. It is important for you to understand HIV/AIDS and the laws that guide the care you provide. The content in this course is applicable to general staff in assisted living and skilled nursing settings.
