Course Overview

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was first identified more than 100 years ago and is now the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It is an autoimmune disorder that results in destruction of the thyroid gland and causes symptoms of hypothyroidism. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is about 10 times more common in women than in men, and it usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 60. The disease is characterized by the presence of lymphocytes in the thyroid gland and a positive test for antibodies to thyroperoxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (Tg). Once patients progress to overt hypothyroidism, treatment must be initiated with levothyroxine (Levoxyl, Synthroid, Levothroid, Unithroid, and others) to restore hormone levels to their normal ranges. Levothyroxine has a narrow therapeutic index and must be monitored accordingly. Healthcare professionals play an integral role in the proper management and treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. With appropriate dosing and monitoring, patients can live a normal life without any hypothyroid symptoms.
