Course Overview

Today about 3,000 American babies a year are born with neural tube defects, a 25% drop since 1995. This reduction is attributed to folic acid food fortification and the push to have all women of childbearing age take folic acid supplements regularly. Yet only half of women of childbearing age take this supplement. Healthcare providers should educate these women about the importance of taking folic acid supplements before they become pregnant as well as during early pregnancy, when the neural tube forms. Folic acid also appears to have a beneficial effect on other diseases and disorders, such as cardiovascular disease and autism.
