Summary:

Supplement use for sports and physique enhancement is a multibillion-dollar industry with new products continually entering the market. Use of supplements by the general population, and specifically by young men, is on the rise. Targeted messages promising these young men the results they crave come from a wide variety of sources, including healthcare professionals and others with some level of credibility to the public. Registered dietitian nutritionists and other healthcare practitioners working with recreational and competitive athletes must continuously update their knowledge about sports supplements. This knowledge can aid the practitioner in having an honest and evidence-based discussion on the safety and efficacy of the supplement and in developing trust and credibility when working with this population.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program about sports supplements is to educate registered dietitian nutritionists and other healthcare professionals working with recreational and competitive athletes on knowledge of where athletes (and the general population) gain knowledge about popular sports supplements, the efficacy and safety of these supplements, and how to help athletes avoid banned supplements. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the top three reasons why college-age male recreational and competitive athletes take sport and physique-enhancing supplements
  • List five supplements used predominantly by male athletes and describe their intended benefit(s)
  • List four quality-control and/or safety issues regarding sports supplements
