During the past 30 years, green tea has exploded in popularity, both as a drink and as an extract in supplements. An estimated 150 million gallons of green tea are consumed yearly in the U.S., and the extract is available in hundreds of supplements. Green tea has been peddled as a medicinal tool in Asian cultures for centuries, and recently it has gained notoriety as an antioxidant, protective against cancer, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. Although many studies display the beneficial effects of green tea, many questions remain unanswered.
The goal of this green tea continuing education course is to understand the potential health benefits of green tea, the limitations of these benefits, and what research has and has not been performed to investigate these claims. At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define functional food and phytochemical, and explain why green tea is considered a functional food/beverage
- Identify the major polyphenols found in green and black tea, and discuss at least three proposed mechanisms regarding tea’s ability to protect against cardiovascular disease
- Summarize and convey to clients and consumers the evidence-based health benefits of green tea, and make appropriate recommendations regarding the consumption of green tea
