We live in an increasingly global society where cultural diversity predominates. It is not enough to simply recognize cultural diversity. The goal of each healthcare professional, as well as every healthcare organization, should be to become culturally competent. Cultural competency, as related to healthcare and health education, is the ability to understand and respond effectively to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients or clients. The development of cultural competency is a process that occurs along a continuum.
The purpose of this continuing education program is to motivate dietitians, dietary managers, fitness professionals, health educators, occupational therapists and social workers to take steps toward developing cultural sensitivity and competency. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
- Explain the value and importance of integrating cultural competency in the educations and training of healthcare professionals as well as developing individual and organizational cultural competency
- Discuss the six progressive steps of the Cultural Competency Continuum
- Explain why cultural values, more than income or race, can determine the quality of healthcare a patient receives
