Course Overview

Fat loading is a dietary strategy shown to enhance further the body‘s ability to use fat as fuel while sparing muscle glycogen. Does rocky road ice cream for breakfast and a bucket of fried chicken for lunch sound too good to be true? Fat loading, both short-term and long-term, are recent nutritional strategies for improving athletic performance. High-fat diets are purported to enhance endurance by promoting fat oxidation and carbohydrate sparing. This course explains the rationale behind fat loading and athletic performance, provides a detailed discussion of fat metabolism during exercise, discusses the effects of endurance training on fat metabolism and examines whether fat loading is harmful.
