Course Overview

When the attending physician recommended discontinuing all life-sustaining measures for his mother, who had been placed on a ventilator after a serious stroke, Mr. O’Connor and his sister agreed. After a sleepless night he called the physician with a change of heart regarding the nutrition support. “She fed everyone in town. I don’t want her to starve to death.” How often do you encounter a situation that has ethical implications? The answer may be fairly often if you’re practicing as an RDN in today’s complicated healthcare environment. How do dietitians know what the ethical choice is in a complicated dilemma? In caring for patients, ethical decisions need to be made daily, and the rules of conduct for making challenging bioethical decisions require a firm understanding of the appropriate process for ethical situations and the professional code of ethics, especially when life collides with death. Having the ability to work through these real-life situations in a systematic and ethical manner can maintain professional integrity while recognizing an individual patient’s physical and emotional needs, as well as cultural experience, to ensure dignity in care decisions.

About the Course Author

Dale Ames Kline, MS, RD, LD, has created continuing education programs since 1984. A former hospital chief clinical dietitian and nutrition educator in a state WIC program, she has written, edited, and presented numerous continuing education seminars and home study courses and has lectured before international, national, state, and local groups of medical, fitness, and nutrition professionals. Kline has been active in local, state, and regional dietetics associations; was named "Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year" in 1984; and was awarded "Outstanding Nutrition Entrepreneur of the Year" in 2001 by the Nutrition Entrepreneurs Practice Group. She was elected as a Professional Issues Delegate to the House of Delegates of ADA in 2003. Kline resides in Upstate New York and the U.S. Virgin Islands; she holds a BA from Tufts University and an MS from the University of Missouri. Megan Dennis Baumler, PhD, RD, CD, has practiced as a clinical, community, and academic dietitian for more than a decade. She is a professor of dietetics at Mount Mary University and a freelance writer. Her areas of expertise include ethics, nutrigenetics, gastrointestinal physiology, and research methodology. Baumler lives in Minnesota and earned BS and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
