Course Overview

Nearly everyone knows what dizziness feels like, whether remembering what it felt like to spin around as a child on the playground or what it felt like as an adult to stand up too fast or battle seasickness. Dizziness may be one of the vague occurrences that patients or clients report as each person may use the term dizzy to refer to different kinds of symptoms. One person may say he feels lightheaded, but another may say he feels like the room is spinning. Some may say they have poor equilibrium or feel like they are going to faint. Dizziness can be simply described as disturbed postural awareness, where there is a perceived sense of motion. The most frequent forms of vestibular dysfunction in the elderly are peripheral vestibular dysfunction, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and Ménière’s disease. Every factor associated with the maintenance of postural stability deteriorates during aging. In order to properly care for patients with dizziness, care providers must be able to differentiate the types of symptoms, especially reported dizziness in older adults, which can lead to falls and possible injury or even death.
