Summary:

Surgeons perform surgery on patients with pilonidal sinus disease with the assistance of a CST or CSFA. A pilonidal cyst is a benign condition associated with the inflammation of the hair follicle and commonly occurs on the dorsal aspect of the patient between the sacrum and the anus (often referred to as the natal cleft or sacrococcygeal region). When the hair follicle becomes infected, it needs to be surgically incised and drained. CSTs and CSFAs need continuing education on this procedure and in all different educational areas to increase their knowledge.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide surgical technologists with accurate information about pilonidal sinus disease (PSD), its management, the techniques of surgery, and its potential complications. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Explain the pathology of pilonidal sinus disease.
  • Describe the indications for pilonidal sinus surgery.
  • Explain the steps associated with pilonidal sinus surgery.

A good amount of detail pertaining to the risk factors and overall healing issues found with pilonidals. I knew they were recurrent but I didn't realize until this course, at the how high the recurrence rate is. This is good to know. Some of the instrumentation listed that says "required" I feel is not correct as I have done many of these cases with different surgeons and most of the time they really only need clamps, scissors, retractors, probes, and a few other things, but no where near the amount of instrumentation listed in the course. I could understand if it were pilonidals with skin grafting and other procedural plans, but otherwise, plain pilonidals are a fairly simple setup. Otherwise, great course.
