Axillary node dissection is an important stage in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Surgeons are performing axillary node dissections in the operating room with assistance of a CST and/or a CSFA. CSTs and CSFAs need continuing education hours in all different educational areas to increase their knowledge.

The goal of this axillary node dissection continuing education program is to provide surgical technologists with information about axillary node dissection, including when the procedure is performed and its potential complications. After completing this activity, the surgical technologist will be able to:
  • Describe how a patient is positioned for axillary node dissection
  • Describe the procedural sequence for the performance of axillary node dissection
  • Identify the potential complications that can be encountered during and following an axillary node dissection
