Surgical Technology (1.25 CE Credit)

Pericardial effusion is a common surgical complication after an open heart procedure.  The surgeon can quickly and effectively perform a pericardial window and drain the fluid around the heart as well as remove a portion of the pericardium. The more education and background information that a CST or CSFA has on this procedure, the better the outcome for the patient.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide surgical technologists with accurate information about the subxiphoid window, when it is used and its potential complications. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe how a subxiphoid pericardial window is performed
  • Discuss the possible complications of a subxiphoid window
  • Describe the anatomy of the pericardium
